The short answer

What is eCommerce store SEO?

eCommerce SEO is search engine optimization for online stores. It makes category and product pages rank for buying searches, fixes the technical problems stores create, such as duplicate variant URLs and filter pages, and adds product schema so listings stand out in Google Shopping, search results and AI answers.

Most store traffic should come from category pages, not the homepage. A shopper searching for "women's waterproof hiking boots" wants a page that shows exactly that. We build and optimize those pages first, then the products and guides around them.

We have done SEO for stores from small specialist shops to catalogues with 150,000+ products. See the work in our portfolio.

eCommerce SEO is right if your store

  • Gets most of its sales from paid ads
  • Has products that do not show up in Google
  • Lost rankings after a redesign or platform move
  • Competes with Amazon and big retailers on product searches

Why it is different

Four SEO problems almost every online store has

Store platforms create SEO problems that brochure websites never have. These are the ones we fix first.

  • Duplicates

    Variants, filters and duplicate URLs

Colour, size and filter options can create thousands of near-identical URLs.

    • Faceted navigation controlled
    • Canonicals for variants
    • Clean, crawlable sitemaps
    Technical SEO fixes
  • Categories

    Thin category pages

Category pages with only a product grid rarely rank for the searches that matter most.

    • Helpful category copy
    • Sub-categories for real searches
    • Internal links to top products
  • Products

    Copied product descriptions

Manufacturer descriptions are on dozens of other stores, so Google has no reason to rank yours.

    • Unique descriptions and specs
    • Questions and reviews on page
    • Optimized titles and images
    Content and SEO writing
  • Schema

No rich results or Shopping data

Without product schema and feeds, listings miss prices, stars and stock in search.

    • Product, Offer and Review schema
    • Merchant Center free listings
    • Ready for AI shopping answers

I had an amazing experience working with him. He helped me tremendously by checking my SEO audit twice, and both times, his insights were spot on. My thread finally ranked after I understood the issue, which no one else was able to identify—except for him. He is truly a trusted professional in the SEO space.

If you’re stuck on something SEO-related, you can confidently trust him with your project. He is not only knowledgeable but also great at communication and very helpful. He even did several things for me as a complimentary service without charging anything. Overall, a fantastic person and an expert in his field. Highly recommended!

FAQ

eCommerce SEO questions, answered

Straight answers about SEO for online stores. Something else on your mind? Ask us.

Ask a question

What is the difference between eCommerce SEO and normal SEO?

Normal SEO focuses on a handful of service pages and blog posts. eCommerce SEO deals with hundreds or thousands of category and product pages, duplicate URLs from variants and filters, product schema and feeds, and the goal of turning visits into orders, not just leads.

Which pages should an online store optimize first?

Category pages usually come first, because they match the broad buying searches with the most traffic, such as "running shoes for women". Then the best-selling products, then buying guides that link to both.

Can you do SEO for Shopify stores?

Yes. Shopify creates some SEO issues of its own, such as duplicate product URLs inside collections and limited control over URLs and robots.txt. We work within Shopify's rules to fix what can be fixed and optimize everything else. We also work with WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce and custom platforms.

How do you handle out-of-stock and discontinued products?

Temporarily out-of-stock products usually stay live with clear stock information. Permanently discontinued products are redirected to the closest alternative or category, so you keep their rankings and links instead of creating 404 errors.

Do I need unique descriptions for every product?

Not always for every product, but for your best sellers and most important categories, yes. Copying the manufacturer's description means your page looks the same as every other store selling that product. We prioritize the pages that bring in the most revenue.

How long does eCommerce SEO take to work?

Technical fixes and quick wins can show results within weeks. Category and product rankings usually build over three to six months, depending on your store's size, competition and starting point.

Will SEO replace my Google Ads?

Over time, SEO can reduce how much you rely on paid ads, because organic sales cost nothing per click. Most stores run both: ads for fast, targeted sales and SEO for long-term, lower-cost growth.

Can you track sales from organic search?

Yes. We set up GA4 eCommerce tracking and Search Console, so you can see which pages, products and searches bring in revenue, not just traffic.
